Millions of American citizens feel politically powerless in our self-rule democracy. Political myths tell us citizens are the ultimate political power in our system of government and we buy it—even after, based on personal experience, the myths are shown to be false. To cope with this illusion, Americans do a weird thing—they willingly suspended their disbelief in the political myths and pretend the myths are true. This tug-of-war between political myths and political reality gives rise to a feeling of powerlessness, drives citizens out of the political arena, and places our democracy on autopilot— allowing self-serving interest groups to hijack the politics of who gets what in America. This book exposes the hidden role political myths play in our democracy but more importantly, describes how American citizens can trade-in their mythical popular sovereignty for the real thing—political self-rule, in fact.

This is a great and very timely book. It helps me understand what is happening now (March 2016) with the broad support for Donald Trump as a citizens-protest candidate, and why Bary Sanders will probably be very influential at the Convention of Democrats this summer. In terms of political and social analysis, Dr. Fraser is onto some important things--not about this election, per se--but about our whole political process; and thoughtful ways in which can actively participate in and reform it.
Intended as a reader for undergraduate political science courses--meaning that it's narrative style and presentation of ideas and analyses may seem a bit simplistic--this book should have much broader appeal to academicians as well as ordinary citizens.relevance.

America Democracy You Where Have All the Citizens Gone? Ronald R Fraser PhD 9780578170473 Books Reviews
Dr. Fraser was interviewed by Ralph Nader on his radio show and Nader highly recommended this book!
not my type of book
An excellent and insightful exploration of the U.S. Political System as it evolved from the colonial period to the present The book identifies and discusses the political theories, political beliefs, and economic conditions that were instrumental in bringing our system to its current status. It explores constructive actions "we the people" can take to regain control of our elected officials and reestablish an accessible and responsive political system.
