Poker-faced Nellie Conway, the nurses bed-ridden Elizabeth Bain, brings trouble when she calls on Perry Mason with a glass phial containing four pills which she suspects are poison. Her employer, Nathan Bain, she says, had promised her money to give them to his wife. But when Mason has one of the pills analyzed it is found to consist of acetylsalicylic – in other words good old-fashioned aspirin. The case which began like a joke suddenly becomes sinister. Perry gets his client out of this spot but trails her to Orleans where he has a hard job disentangling fact from theory on the subject of Mrs. Bain.

Burger even comments on that. Great courtroom scene early with Perry defending a client on a charge a little out of his line but it is one of the more enjoyable cross examinations. The main event is Perry vs Burger on a murder case that only tangentially involves the fiery fingers. But Perry has a nice sojourn through New Orleans and there are some scenes were Perry is very frank with witnesses and he manages to get Paul to break a number of laws to get a conversation on phonograph. Classic
Better then the show. This one tells a better story then the show, and the nurse isn't the one who might have done it. But no spoilers.
I know that a lot of people is not a big fan of Perry Mason because this series focuses more on the court part than other detective novels. But I am a really big fan of this series. I got all the books of Perry Mason and love each of them.

This book did not meet expectations in either plot or characterization. The story was particularly contrived and repetitious and the murderer was obvious from the start. Perry goes flying all over the place for no good reason and most scenes were awkward. Worse, the end was especially lame and disappointing.

I fully enjoyed reading this story. There were so many suspects that you needed to look before you pick the guilty person. Right down to the very end when Perry Mason revealed the true facts and who the killer was.
