Normally when I read original historical texts I do so to try to get a feel for how people lived back then and besides from the Norse Sagas most writing that claims to be a true account of what happened is interesting, but suitable to read with some Chamomile tea before bed (Hello Bede!) But this book....Wow. Violence, violence, violence all in the name of power. It is like Game of Thrones but that it is very likely that the power plays happened.

What I see in this book is the power players using the Bible as an excuse to kill each other, something often mentioned as happening but really until the Crusades and then the Thirty Years War I don't think it was really as common as our more secular society claims it is..But not in sixth and seventh Century France and Germany. We have Childebert (everyone is named 'bert 1400 years before the comic Dilbert did it) thinking the Bible condemns Merovech, his son, from marrying his Uncle's widow Brunhilda so they set about trying to kill each other.

There are poisonings, there are slaves being buried alive by (obviously) cruel kings. There are mentions of Pope Gregory and they really focus on St. Martin for some reason.

My problems with the book are these: Its annotated. I want to read about the Franks fighting Huns but they don't let me. The typos in the Kindle formatting are terrible and abundant. But the Kindle price is right for this book and it is exciting to read. If you wanted students to start out with Medieval History that would inspire their interest, I would choose this book, annotated or not.

Pretty archaic writing and it doesn't flow for the modern reader. I wouldn't recommend this book for the serious reader.
This book is a classic of European history. I'm glad it's available on the !
I bought this for a history class, only to find out that it's missing a lot of material, it basically lists all the chapters it leaves out. Find another edition if you need the whole book. Oh well, at least I only wasted a dollar...
This is an interesting source document for the dark ages. The most significant negative for this translation is that approximately 1/3 of the document is missing, with only summary text indicating what the missing chapter covered.

Oh, and the last 1/3 of the book is Gregory...being pretty darn snippy about his contemporaries.
